Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) 2019-2020

When and where does Little Athletics take place?

The WWPLAC season commences on Friday 4 October 2019, 6:00pm at McEvoy Oval Umina.

We then compete regularly on Friday nights at 6:00pm, with a break over the Christmas period.

The final night of local competition is Friday 6 March 2020.

We operate on a weekly rotating program of events tailored to each age group.

Who can participate in Little Athletics?

Children between the ages of 5 and 17 years can register and compete. No experience is necessary!

Parents, grandparents and friends can also be involved by helping with the various events.

All athletes in U12 – U17 age groups automatically become 'dual registered' with Athletics NSW (ANSW). Dual membership provides a pathway for these athletes to join an ANSW club and participate in ANSW events.

Find out more about dual registration

In which age group will my child participate?

Age groups for athletes in the 2019-2020 season are determined by what age the athlete turns in 2019.

For example, if you turn 10 in 2019, you will compete in under 11.

This means that for an athlete to compete in our youngest age group, under 6, they must turn 5 in 2019.

View the Little Athletics NSW Age Group calculation table.

What events are offered?

Events offered at a centre competition are dependant on the athlete’s age and the centre program for that week. Some events have age restrictions on them.

What level of ability do children have to be to join?

Our emphasis is on family, fun and fitness! Athletes of all levels of skill and ability are encouraged to join, and no experience is necessary. We are committed to providing all athletes with a supportive and inclusive environment, and encouraging all to achieve their personal best.

Can I use Active Kids Vouchers?

Yes definitely!

The Active Kids program provides two $100 vouchers for parents, guardians and carers of school-enrolled children to use towards sport and active recreation costs each year. From 1 July 2019, parents, guardians and carers can apply for the second $100 Active Kids voucher.

Apply for your Active Kids voucher here.

Please note that you will only be able to use one voucher per child.

What time do competition nights finish?

The finish time for competition nights depends on a number of things, including how many and what events are on the program, and how many athletes are participating in the age group.

For the littlest athletes (under 6 to under 8) we usually run 3 or 4 events, and try to get them finished by 7:00pm or just after. If there are 3 events and more than one is a sprint, then you might be done a bit earlier! However, if there is a big age group, or there are throws or jumps events, competition might extend a little later.

From under 9 upwards athletes start to compete in more events each week which extends the finish time, usually to around 7:30pm, or even 8:00pm for older athletes and those who choose to compete in distance events.

Occasionall we may also encounter technical or weather glitches that can hold up proceedings. This is the nature of athletics, and we kindly ask that you be patient and considerate of the volunteers who give up their time to run these events. We are doing the best we can!

We will continue to update our programs to reflect registration numbers in our efforts to make competition nights run as smoothly as possible.

What is expected of parents?

Because Little Athletics is a totally voluntary organisation, we cannot operate without the assistance of parents each week in fulfilling the many and varied duties required.

Each age group is required to have at least one age manager volunteer (this can be shared between two parents over alternating weeks) and is also rostered on to cover the canteen one night per season, and to cover the BBQ one night per season.

If we do not have these volunteers for your child’s age group, they will not be able to compete.

Additional assistance is always needed on our Committee or in coaching positions.

All parents are encouraged to become involved. Little Athletics is one of the few sports where parents can become fully involved in their child’s sporting interests.

If you are interested in volunteering on a more permanent basis, please contact us to discuss options.

We would be very grateful and offer full training and support for any parent or family member keen to get involved!

Do children need to wear a uniform?

Yes. All registered athletes must wear our approved centre uniform when competing in Little Athletics competitions. There are also patches that need to be applied to the centre uniform. It is important that these are placed in the correct location.

Find out more about our uniform and attaching age patches here

What shoes should I buy my child?

Appropriate footwear is compulsory for all athletes in all events. No athlete may wear football boots or cleats in any event.

Spikes are not compulsory, but if you choose to wear them, the following rules apply. Athletes in the U9 - U10 age group may not wear spike shoes. Athletes in the U11 - U12 age group may wear spike shoes in events run entirely in lanes, long jump, triple jump, high jump and javelin. Athletes in the U13 - U15 age groups may wear spike shoes in all track events except walks. Spike shoes may also be worn for long jump, triple jump, high jump and javelin.

You can read the full rules in the Standard Rules for Competition of Little Athletics Australia (Rule 143).

We recommend shopping at Rebel Sport for your footwear and equipment. Mention our club at the checkout and 5% of the value of your purchase will be donated to us to continue to upgrade our equipment.

Does WWPLAC offer training for athletes?

WWPLAC offers regular training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday nights once the season commences. Training is not compulsory, but is offered for those athletes who want to improve their skills for competition.

Training times and events on offer will depend on our volunteer coaches who all balance their training services with full-time jobs.

Our training program will be reviewed closer to the start of the season, so stay tuned for updates!

We are always on the lookout for parents, family and friends who may have coaching experience and would like to volunteer their time, or those who have participated in athletics and would like Club support to gain training accreditation. If this is you, please contact us

Little Athletics NSW also conducts coaching clinics and camps at various venues and times throughout the season. There is also a good range of online information available on technique at the Little Athletics NSW website.

It's raining! (or very hot...) How do I get updates?

Never fear, we are very conscious of getting information out to athletes and families as soon as it is available! The best ways to monitor what is happening with competition is to follow us on Facebook and on TeamApp

What other competitions are available?

There are various competitions conducted each season for registered members.
